Freezing Temperatures Force Disney World to Close Park, Trigger System-Wide Disruptions

Cinderella Castle's 'Bad Hair Day' Disrupts Magic Kingdom Views

Walt Disney World is grappling with unusual freezing temperatures, leading to significant operational disruptions and the confirmed closure of Typhoon Lagoon for three days. Central Florida is currently under a Cold Weather Advisory and a more severe Freeze Watch, prompting concerns across both Disney and Universal Orlando Resorts as guests face an unexpected shift in their vacation plans.

The National Weather Service issued a Cold Weather Advisory for Orange, Osceola, and Seminole counties, the heart of Orlando’s theme park corridor, effective from 1:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 27. Wind chills are projected to plummet to as low as 27 degrees during this period. Further escalating concerns, a Freeze Watch is now in effect from late Tuesday night through Wednesday morning, January 28, 2026, with temperatures potentially falling to 30 degrees or below, particularly in areas surrounding the resorts.

Disney has already confirmed that Typhoon Lagoon water park will be closed from January 27 through January 29, suspending operations for three full days. While the primary theme parks at Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando Resort aren’t expected to close entirely, visitors should prepare for widespread modifications and temporary suspensions. Outdoor entertainment, parades, and nighttime spectaculars may be altered or canceled, depending on fluctuating wind and temperature conditions.

Attractions with exposed track systems, such as Disney’s Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and Expedition Everest, along with Universal’s Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit and Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure, are particularly vulnerable. Guests may experience delayed ride openings or intermittent closures throughout the day as temperatures remain low. Character meet-and-greets outdoors could also be impacted.

This isn’t the first time Central Florida’s theme parks have contended with rare cold snaps. In previous winters, freezes have forced Disney to shut down water parks, modify parades, and delay morning openings. Universal has faced similar challenges, often pausing operations on its high-speed coasters. The risks extend beyond guest comfort, impacting essential infrastructure like pipes and ride systems.

Social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Reddit are buzzing with guests sharing screenshots of weather alerts and discussing the potential impact on their carefully planned vacations. Longtime annual passholders describe the forecast as “concerning,” while first-time visitors worry about how much of their experience might change.

For travelers currently in Orlando or arriving within the next 48 hours, flexibility is paramount. Guests are strongly advised to dress in multiple layers and bring jackets, especially for the colder early mornings and late evenings. Morning rope drop strategies might need adjustment due to delayed ride testing. Water park plans, especially for Typhoon Lagoon, are entirely off the table for the next few days.

While this cold front presents a stark contrast to the usual Florida sunshine, many fans are embracing the unique atmosphere. Some are sharing photos of foggy castle views, finding a different kind of magic in the bundled-up park experience. The parks, known for their resilience, will undoubtedly adapt, but for now, the usual enchantment comes with a surprising chill.
