After just over 18 months of operation, Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser will be closing its doors for good on September 30, 2023. The announcement was made by Disney Parks, Experiences and Products Chairman Josh D’Amaro on May 18, 2023.
“We’ve learned a lot from our guests over the past year and a half, and we’re excited to take what we’ve learned and apply it to future projects,” D’Amaro said in a statement. “We appreciate the support of our guests and cast members who have made Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser such a special experience.”
The Galactic Starcruiser is a two-day, immersive experience that allows guests to live out their Star Wars fantasies. Guests board the Halcyon, a luxurious starship that is on a journey to the planet Batuu. Throughout the voyage, guests interact with characters from the Star Wars galaxy, participate in missions, and explore the ship’s many amenities.
The Galactic Starcruiser was met with mixed reviews from critics and fans. Some praised the experience for its immersiveness and attention to detail, while others criticized the high price tag and the lack of interactivity.
Despite the mixed reviews, the Galactic Starcruiser was a financial success for Disney. The experience was consistently booked solid, and it generated millions of dollars in revenue. However, Disney ultimately decided to close the Galactic Starcruiser in order to focus on other projects.
“We’re constantly evaluating our portfolio of experiences, and we’ve made the decision to sunset Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser,” D’Amaro said. “We’re grateful to our guests who have taken this journey with us, and we’re excited to see what the future holds for Star Wars at Disney Parks.”
The closure of the Galactic Starcruiser is a significant blow to Disney’s Star Wars plans. The experience was seen as a major step forward for the company’s immersive storytelling efforts, and it was expected to be a major draw for fans of the Star Wars franchise. However, the closure of the Galactic Starcruiser suggests that Disney is still struggling to find the right formula for its Star Wars experiences.
In the wake of the closure, it is unclear what the future holds for Star Wars at Disney Parks. However, it is clear that Disney is committed to the Star Wars franchise, and it is likely that the company will continue to develop new and innovative ways for fans to experience the galaxy far, far away.
